Poetic Melodies: Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway

simply gorgeous...

I often find poetry hanging out in the  songs of my favorite artists.  I’d like to pull out some lyrics that are pure poetry to me in what I call, “Poetic Melodies.”  Lalah Hathaway is the daughter of my favorite artist of all time: Donny Hathaway.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree so today’s Poetic Melodies is featuring the beautiful, talented Lalah Hathaway.  Enjoy:

It was like a lifetime passed right through my fingers
So long ago so much that I didn’t know
Kind of like a light shined down and showed me howHow to move on that was then and this is now

All around me, everywhere
Seems like nothing but despair
Confusion, disillusion
Hanging in the air

Global melancholy smears
a stain across the sky
Somewhere right now someone’s crying
And I just don’t know why

It’s just the naked truth (Truly alive when I’m with you)
It’s just the naked truth (You’ve changed all I thought I knew)
Yet you were living proof (It was given, the times you spent)
As we climb to heights anew (And the naked truth)

Why cant these memories just be erased
Why must i yearn for your kiss
The first moment we’re not face to face
Reminds me how much your missed
Where do we go

Do you have any Lalah Hathaway favorites?

power of music…

last night a dj saved my life

true story...

I was having a conversation with my good friend The PBG last night about how I often am late to the party when it comes to great music.  In this conversation I was specifically referring to Lalah Hathaway, who has been making music for over 10 years and I just discovered her 3 months ago.  However, I think I discovered her right on time in the scheme of my life.  I have a belief that music finds you right when you need it.  As I blogged last week, her song “Breathe” kept me from completely losing it during a time of crisis.  I believe that song and album wouldn’t have been appreciated at another point in life.   To people who are not big music lovers this may not make a lot of sense, but my life revolves around music, or revolves around me, depending on how narcissistic I am feeling at any given moment.

music heals every heart

word.

Anyway I lost my point, but we continued to talk about some of the songs and/or artists that we either slept on or tucked to the side but revealed themselves at just the right moment.   One of the songs was “Me” by Erykah Badu from New Amerykah, Pt. 1.  It was amazing, or maybe not so amazing, that we both had the same revelations and conections to this song as it pertains to finding your place in the world and realizing you just have to say “F*ck it” sometimes and just be “me.”  I mean be you, not me, but I got to be me.  Now I am confused.  You get the point though, I hope.  Point being, good music warms my soul, even that dead part that makes me hate random stuff.  In case you wondered.

Have you ever had one of those moments when a previously ignored song or artist comes along and tells your story?  Please share.
