haiku: music is like Lays i can’t just listen to one good shit on repeat
I have certain songs of that I will put on repeat or keep playing one part over and over again. There seems to be certain songs in general that just touch a place in my soul or speak to a situation I am going through. What songs have you played to death lately? These are mine:
Maxwell is an artist whose relevance has endured the test of time. I would like to share some of my favorite lyrics from my favorite Maxwell songs that read to me like poetry. Enjoy:
Lead me on girl if you must
Take my heart and my love
Take of me all that you want
And if there’s a thing that you need
I’d give you the breath that I breathe
And if ever you yearn for the love in me
Whenever Wherever Whatever
Teach me ’bout me
Tell me what you thought
I thought, you thought, I thought
Use me, drain me
Of all the things you want
You know girl can’t be bought
Maybe you might be more than
Just a one night lady
Maybe you might be matrimony
Trying to save me
I can’t control the feeling
Girl cause I know you’re here
I feel you from the floor to the ceiling
Girl, I feel you when you comb your hair
There was a time when love wasn’t chosen
now I’m just open for more
now I’m just reaching out for something better
than I had before, girl
there ain’t a bottom line in your world
Ooh and I, I can let my life pass me by
or I can get down and try
work it all out this lifetime
work it on out this time
I can let it all pass me by
or I can just try and try
I can move to the light
oh if I take it one day at a time (oh I)
oh spread my love out and fly
oh I (I can move to the light)
ooh I can just make you understand
that love is not a fairytale in a melody
if you want it you can have it girl
What is your favorite Maxwell song or Maxwell lyric?
I was having a conversation with my good friend The PBG last night about how I often am late to the party when it comes to great music. In this conversation I was specifically referring to Lalah Hathaway, who has been making music for over 10 years and I just discovered her 3 months ago. However, I think I discovered her right on time in the scheme of my life. I have a belief that music finds you right when you need it. As I blogged last week, her song “Breathe” kept me from completely losing it during a time of crisis. I believe that song and album wouldn’t have been appreciated at another point in life. To people who are not big music lovers this may not make a lot of sense, but my life revolves around music, or revolves around me, depending on how narcissistic I am feeling at any given moment.
word.
Anyway I lost my point, but we continued to talk about some of the songs and/or artists that we either slept on or tucked to the side but revealed themselves at just the right moment. One of the songs was “Me” by Erykah Badu from New Amerykah, Pt. 1. It was amazing, or maybe not so amazing, that we both had the same revelations and conections to this song as it pertains to finding your place in the world and realizing you just have to say “F*ck it” sometimes and just be “me.” I mean be you, not me, but I got to be me. Now I am confused. You get the point though, I hope. Point being, good music warms my soul, even that dead part that makes me hate random stuff. In case you wondered.
Have you ever had one of those moments when a previously ignored song or artist comes along and tells your story? Please share.
So I am once again I am feeling kinda hip-hop. “Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Blackstar”, this album here, *fans self*, is one of my favorite hip-hop releases of all time. Here are some poetic melodies from this audio masterpiece:
Brought up, through endangered species status on the planet Earth
Survival tactics means, bustin gats to prove you hard
Your firearms are too short to box with God
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camoflauges
More than usually — speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted — in your usary
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Without makeup you’re beautiful
Whatcha you need to paint the next face for
We’re not dealin with the European standard of beauty tonight
Turn off the TV and put the magazine away
In the mirror tell me what you see
See the evidence of divine presence
At exactly which point do you start to realize
That life without knowledge is, death in disguise?
That’s why, Knowledge Of Self is like life after death
Inner-city concentration camps where no one pays attention
or mentions the ascension of death, til nothing’s left
The young, gifted and Black are sprung addicted to crack
All my people where y’all at cause, y’all ain’t here
And your hero’s using your mind as a canvas to paint fear
With, broad brush strokes and tales of incarceration
You get out of jail with that Knowledge of Self determination
Stand in ovation, cause you put the Hue in Human
Cause and effect, effect everything you do
and that’s why I got love in the face of hate
So much on my mind that I can’t recline
Blasting holes in the night til she bled sunshine
Breathe in, inhale vapors from bright stars that shine
Breathe out, weed smoke retrace the skyline
Heard the bass ride out like an ancient mating call
I can’t take it y’all, I can feel the city breathing
Chest heaving, against the flesh of the evening
Sigh before we die like the last train leaving
